India’s Stance ‘Measured and Responsible’, Jaishankar Reassures US Amid Escalation with Pakistan

New Delhi, May 10, 2025 – Amid heightened military conflict with Pakistan, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar assured the United States that India’s approach has been and continues to be “measured and responsible.” He made the remarks during a phone call with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Saturday morning.

“Had a conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio this morning. India’s approach has always been measured and responsible and remains so,” Mr Jaishankar posted on X.

The call came even as Pakistan intensified its offensive with missile and drone attacks, and the Indian Army retaliated under Operation Sindoor, which was launched after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 civilian lives.

US Pushes for De-escalation

Rubio, who has also reached out to Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, has repeatedly called for de-escalation and offered US assistance to initiate “constructive talks” between the two nuclear-armed nations.

A US Department of State spokesperson confirmed the calls, adding that Rubio emphasized the need to avoid further civilian casualties and maintain regional stability.

“Secretary Rubio has reiterated that Islamabad must take concrete steps to end any state support for terrorist groups,” the statement said.

This marks Rubio’s second call with Jaishankar in a week, reflecting growing US concern over the rapidly worsening situation in South Asia.

White House Also Monitoring

President Donald Trump has also urged restraint. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the President wants the situation to “de-escalate as quickly as possible”, acknowledging the historical tensions that predate his administration.

“The President understands this is a decades-old rivalry. He wants both sides to step back,” she said.

Ground Situation in India

Despite diplomatic outreach, Pakistan continued shelling Indian civilian areas, including a deadly strike in Rajouri that claimed the life of senior J&K official Raj Kumar Thappa. The border situation remains tense with intermittent explosions reported in Srinagar, Udhampur, Pathankot, and several areas along the Line of Control (LoC).

Wing Commander Vyomika Singh and Colonel Sofiya Qureshi revealed in a special briefing that Pakistan had targeted both military installations and civilian infrastructure, which India termed “cowardly” and “irresponsible.”

“India has responded swiftly but proportionately, focusing only on military targets and avoiding collateral damage,” said Jaishankar.
