Indonesia Joins BRICS as Full Member, Strengthening Global South Cooperation
Brasilia [Brazil], January 7: Indonesia has officially joined the BRICS group as a full member, marking a significant milestone in global economic cooperation. The announcement was made by Brazil, the current BRICS president for 2025, following the consensus reached during the Johannesburg Summit in 2023.
In an official statement, the Brazilian Foreign Ministry warmly welcomed Indonesia’s inclusion into the bloc, acknowledging the nation’s economic strength and strategic importance in Southeast Asia.
“The Brazilian government welcomes Indonesia for its entry into BRICS. As the largest economy and most populous nation in Southeast Asia, Indonesia shares with other BRICS members the support for the reform of global governance institutions and contributes significantly to the deepening of Global South cooperation,” the statement read.
The statement further highlighted that Indonesia’s membership aligns with Brazil’s theme for its presidency in 2025: “Enhancing Global South Cooperation for a More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance.”
Indonesia’s interest in joining BRICS was formally expressed after the establishment of its new government. The BRICS nations unanimously approved Indonesia’s membership in 2024, adhering to the principles and procedures established during the Johannesburg Summit.
As the largest economy in Southeast Asia, Indonesia’s inclusion is expected to enhance economic collaboration, political dialogue, and developmental initiatives within BRICS.
BRICS—originally an acronym for Brazil, Russia, India, and China—was formalized in 2006 and held its first summit in 2009 in Russia’s Yekaterinburg. The group became BRICS with South Africa’s inclusion in 2010, further expanding its global reach.
In 2024, BRICS underwent another significant expansion, adding Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE as new members. With Indonesia’s inclusion, BRICS now represents an even larger share of the global economy and population.
Indonesia’s entry into BRICS is seen as a move to strengthen collective efforts towards reforming global governance structures. The country brings its economic dynamism, regional influence, and commitment to sustainable development to the BRICS platform.
As Brazil gears up to host the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan in 2024, the focus will remain on amplifying cooperation among member nations and addressing global challenges such as climate change, economic inequality, and geopolitical stability.
With Indonesia joining the fold, BRICS is set to further consolidate its role as a powerful voice of the Global South, advocating for a more equitable global order. The addition of new members signals a strategic expansion of influence and a stronger push for multipolarity in international relations.
As the world watches this growing coalition, the coming years will likely see enhanced trade partnerships, technological collaboration, and sustainable development initiatives across BRICS member states.
