Millions of Instagram users were left horrified as their Reels feeds were unexpectedly flooded with graphic and disturbing content, sparking outrage and concerns over Meta’s content moderation policies.

February 27, 2025: On February 26, 2025, Instagram users worldwide were alarmed by an unexpected surge of highly graphic and sensitive content flooding their Reels feeds. Videos depicting extreme violence, animal cruelty, and other disturbing scenes appeared without warning, even for users who had activated the platform’s Sensitive Content Control features.

In response to the widespread outcry, Meta, Instagram’s parent company, issued an apology on February 27, attributing the incident to a technical error. A Meta spokesperson stated, “We are fixing an error that caused some users to see content in their Instagram Reels feed that should not have been recommended. We apologize for the mistake.”

This incident has intensified scrutiny of Meta’s content moderation policies.
