In response to the widespread outcry, Meta, Instagram’s parent company, issued an apology on February 27, attributing the incident to a technical error. A Meta spokesperson stated, “We are fixing an error that caused some users to see content in their Instagram Reels feed that should not have been recommended. We apologize for the mistake.”

This incident has intensified scrutiny of Meta’s content moderation policies. In recent months, the company has made significant changes, including replacing third-party fact-checkers with a community-based system and altering policies related to sensitive content. These adjustments have raised concerns among experts and advocacy groups about the potential for increased exposure to harmful material.
Despite Meta’s assurances that they are addressing the issue, the incident underscores the challenges social media platforms face in effectively moderating content and protecting users from exposure to distressing material.
