IPL 2025: CSK Edge Out KKR in Last-Over Thriller as Brevis, Dube and Dhoni Shine

Debutant Dewald Brevis’ explosive fifty, Shivam Dube’s composure, and MS Dhoni’s calm finish seal a two-wicket win for Chennai Super Kings against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens.

Kolkata, May 8:
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) held their nerve in a dramatic chase to clinch a thrilling two-wicket win over defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens in IPL 2025. This marked CSK’s third win of the season, propelled by standout performances from Dewald Brevis, Shivam Dube, and a vintage finishing touch by MS Dhoni.

Chasing 180, CSK’s innings began in disarray. They were rocked early with both Ayush Mhatre and Devon Conway dismissed for ducks within the first two overs — by Vaibhav Arora and Moeen Ali respectively. But debutant Urvil Patel injected momentum with a blazing 31 off just 11 balls, including four sixes, before falling to Harshit Rana.

The middle order wobbled again with Ravichandran Ashwin (8) and Ravindra Jadeja (19) departing cheaply, leaving CSK tottering at 60/5. It was then that Dewald Brevis and Shivam Dube stepped up, steering the innings with a crucial 67-run partnership. Brevis hammered 52 off 25 balls, including a sensational 30-run over off Arora, to register his maiden IPL half-century.

After Brevis was dismissed by Varun Chakravarthy, MS Dhoni walked in and joined Dube to add a vital 43-run stand. Dube’s composed 45 off 40 kept CSK in the hunt until his dismissal in the 19th over.

Needing 8 runs off the final over, Dhoni launched the first ball for a massive six off Andre Russell, shifting the pressure. Anshul Kamboj then sealed the game with the winning runs, as CSK finished at 183/8 in 19.4 overs. Dhoni remained unbeaten on 17 off 18 balls, anchoring yet another clutch finish.

For KKR, Arora (3/48) had mixed fortunes, while Chakravarthy and Rana picked up two wickets each.

Earlier, KKR posted a competitive 179/6, thanks to key contributions from Ajinkya Rahane (48 off 33), Sunil Narine (26 off 17), Andre Russell (38 off 21) and *Manish Pandey (36 off 28)**. CSK’s bowling was led by Noor Ahmad, who impressed with figures of 4/31.

Brief Scores:
KKR: 179/6 (Rahane 48, Russell 38; Noor Ahmad 4/31)
CSK: 183/8 in 19.4 overs (Brevis 52, Dube 45; Arora 3/48)
