March 24, 2025: Visakhapatnam: The IPL 2025 opener between Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants saw fireworks right from the start as LSG’s Mitchell Marsh unleashed a brutal onslaught, smashing a 21-ball half-century before falling for a sensational 72. LSG raced to 161/2 in just 13 overs, sending a strong message early in the season.

Delhi Capitals, led by new skipper Axar Patel, had won the toss and opted to bowl. Debutant Vipraj Nigam made an early impact by dismissing Aiden Markram, but was later taken to the cleaners by Nicholas Pooran, who lit up Visakhapatnam with four sixes in an over.

Pooran remained unbeaten on 70 off just 27 balls, continuing the carnage after Marsh’s departure. Mukesh Kumar picked up Marsh’s prized wicket with a clever slower delivery, but LSG’s momentum was relentless. The team looked well set to post a total above 220, with Rishabh Pant and David Miller still to come.

This match marked a homecoming of sorts for Pant, now LSG captain, who was picked up for a record ₹27 crore in the auction after spending nine seasons with DC. Pant admitted feeling “emotional” stepping onto the field in new colors.

KL Rahul was unavailable due to the birth of his child, and LSG were also missing key Indian pacers Mayank Yadav, Avesh Khan, and Mohsin Khan — a combined investment of ₹34.75 crore — making this performance even more impressive.
