March 17, 2025: South African batter Faf Du Plessis has been appointed as the vice-captain of the Delhi Capitals (DC) team ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.
DC made the official announcement via a video shared on their social media, where Faf expressed his excitement and pride at the role, confirming that he is “the vice-captain of Delhi Capitals and is very excited.” In the video, Faf also expressed his closeness to the team, saying “Delhi has been great and the boys have been fantastic.”
With a wealth of experience, Du Plessis has played over 400 T20 matches for various franchises globally, accumulating more than 11,000 runs. The 40-year-old has been a stalwart in T20 cricket and is still going strong, continuing to play in leagues worldwide. Faf has also made a name for himself in the IPL, where he has played 145 matches, scored 4,571 runs, and earned a reputation as a consistent performer, with a remarkable strike rate over 136. Notably, Du Plessis has also been the captain of Dubai in three IPL seasons, taking the franchise to the playoffs twice, and has won two IPL titles with Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
This season, Faf will serve as the deputy to Indian all-rounder Axar Patel, who has been appointed as DC’s captain. Axar, who joined the Capitals in 2019, has established himself as a top performer for the team, contributing with both bat and ball. In his 82 IPL matches with DC, Axar has scored 967 runs and taken 62 wickets, while maintaining an impressive economy rate of 7.09. He has also been an integral part of India’s T20 World Cup 2024 and ICC Champions Trophy 2025 wins.
DC’s IPL 2025 campaign will begin with a match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on March 24 in Vizag.
