Gaikwad Reflects on Missed Chances as CSK Fall Short in Nail-Biter Against Royals
Guwahati, March 31: Rajasthan Royals kicked off their IPL 2024 campaign with a thrilling 6-run win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Guwahati, despite a late fightback led by CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad. While Nitish Rana’s explosive 81 off 36 balls powered RR to 182/9, CSK fell just short in the chase, finishing at 176/6.
After the narrow defeat, Gaikwad pointed to fielding lapses and lack of on-field proactiveness during the powerplay as key reasons for the loss.
“Nitish batted really well, but we weren’t proactive enough. He kept going behind square, and we should have adjusted sooner. We gave away 8-10 runs in misfields, and in close matches, those cost you,” Gaikwad said during the post-match presentation.
Despite the defeat, the CSK captain remained upbeat about the team’s batting effort and lauded the bowlers for pulling things back after RR’s fiery start.
“180 was definitely chaseable. It was a good wicket if you timed the ball. I was happy with how we restricted them after the powerplay – they were looking set for 220-230 at one point.”
Gaikwad also addressed the strategic shift in the batting order, revealing that the decision for Rahul Tripathi to open aggressively was planned well in advance.
“We wanted Rahul to express himself at the top. I’m happy to drop down a spot. Whether it’s the first or second over, I’m getting enough time at the crease. It’s about what the team needs.”
He also praised CSK’s bowling trio of Noor Ahmad, Khaleel Ahmed, and Ravindra Jadeja for their consistent performances. However, he stressed the need for better fielding to complement the bowling effort.
“Bowling’s coming together well – Noor, Khaleel, and Jaddu bhai have been excellent. But we’re missing that momentum after taking wickets because our fielding isn’t helping build pressure. Once that clicks, we’ll be a strong side.”
CSK will now regroup and focus on their next home clash against Delhi Capitals on April 5 in Chennai, hoping to iron out the flaws and get their season back on track.
