IPL 2025: Karun Nair’s Blazing 89 Goes in Vain as DC Collapse Hands MI 12-Run Win in Thriller
New Delhi, April 14:
In a high-octane thriller at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Karun Nair’s stunning 89-run knock on his IPL comeback wasn’t enough as Delhi Capitals (DC) suffered a 12-run defeat to Mumbai Indians (MI) following a dramatic late-innings collapse that featured a hat-trick of run-outs.
Chasing a target of 206, DC looked firmly in control at 135/3 after Nair’s blistering innings, but the middle-order crumbled spectacularly, handing MI their second win of the season and snapping DC’s four-match winning streak.
Promoted as an impact sub, Karun Nair turned back the clock with an aggressive display, smashing 89 off 40 balls with 12 boundaries and five sixes. His 22-ball fifty powered DC to 72/1 in the powerplay, despite the early loss of Jake Fraser-McGurk for a golden duck.
Nair and Abishek Porel (33 off 25) added 119 runs for the second wicket, providing a strong base. But once both were dismissed, DC unraveled under pressure.
From 135/3, they slumped to 193 all out in 19 overs, losing their final seven wickets for just 58 runs. The finish was particularly chaotic, with Ashutosh Sharma (17), Kuldeep Yadav, and Mohit Sharma all run out in the space of five balls.
Karn Sharma (3/36) and Mitchell Santner (2/43) turned the tide in MI’s favor, striking in the middle overs and triggering DC’s collapse. Jasprit Bumrah claimed the wicket of Axar Patel and delivered a tight penultimate over.
Earlier, MI posted a competitive 205/5, riding on Tilak Varma’s 59 off 33, Suryakumar Yadav’s 40 off 28, and a late cameo by Naman Dhir (38 off 17). MI were off to a flyer with Ryan Rickelton (41) and Rohit Sharma (18) adding 45 in 4 overs.
Kuldeep Yadav (2/23) and Vipraj Nigam (2/41) were the pick of DC bowlers, keeping MI’s middle order in check.
With this win, MI move to 7th on the table with 2 wins in 6 games, while DC slip to 2nd after seeing their winning streak broken.
