IPL 2025: Rain Ends SRH’s Playoff Dreams as Match Against Delhi Capitals Gets Washed Out

A wet outfield in Hyderabad forces abandonment of Match 55, knocking Sunrisers Hyderabad out of IPL 2025 playoff contention while Delhi Capitals inch closer with a shared point.

Hyderabad, May 5: Persistent rain at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Monday dashed Sunrisers Hyderabad’s hopes of staying alive in the IPL 2025 playoff race. Match 55 of the tournament, featuring SRH and Delhi Capitals (DC), was officially abandoned due to a wet outfield, with both teams settling for a point each.

The Indian Premier League confirmed the news on X (formerly Twitter):
“Match 55 between @SunRisers and @DelhiCapitals has been called off due to wet outfield. Both teams share a point each.”

Hyderabad, who needed a win to remain in contention for the playoffs, now find themselves eliminated with just 8 points from 12 matches. They join Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals on the list of teams no longer in the race. Meanwhile, DC, with 14 points from 12 games, still have a chance to qualify.

The rain began shortly after Delhi Capitals concluded their innings at 133/7, and despite efforts from ground staff, play could not resume.

Earlier in the evening, SRH skipper Pat Cummins won the toss and opted to bowl first. Delhi’s innings got off to a shaky start as their top order crumbled within the powerplay. Karun Nair (0), Faf du Plessis (3), Abhishek Porel (8), and Axar Patel (6) failed to get going, reducing DC to 26/4 in six overs.

KL Rahul (10) and Tristan Stubbs attempted to steady the innings, but Rahul fell to Jaydev Unadkat at 30/5. Stubbs then teamed up with Vipraj Nigam (18) for a 32-run stand, before Nigam was run out in the 13th over.

The finishing touches came from Stubbs and Ashutosh Sharma, who stitched a 50-run stand. Stubbs remained unbeaten on 41 off 36 balls, while Ashutosh contributed 41 off 26 before falling in the final over. DC posted a modest total of 133/7.

Pat Cummins was the pick of SRH’s bowlers, claiming 3/19. Unadkat (1/13), Eshan Malinga (1/28), and Harshal Patel (1/36) chipped in with a wicket each.

Unfortunately for SRH, they never got the chance to chase the 134-run target as rain put a full stop on the fixture.
