IPL 2025: Shreyas Iyer on PBKS Run-Chase Masterclass: “I Thrive Under Pressure”

Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer lauds his team’s aggressive mindset after a composed 72-run knock leads to a crucial four-wicket win over CSK, ending the hosts’ playoff hopes in IPL 2025.

Chennai, May 1:
Punjab Kings (PBKS) skipper Shreyas Iyer continued his golden run in away fixtures, guiding his side to a thrilling four-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Chepauk Stadium on Wednesday. With this result, PBKS climbed to second on the points table, while CSK’s dismal campaign officially ended, marking their elimination from the IPL 2025 playoffs.

Iyer, who played a match-winning knock of 72 off 41 balls, showcased composure and aggression as he anchored PBKS’ successful chase of 191. Speaking at the post-match presentation, Iyer expressed his affinity for chasing under pressure.

“I love chasing on any field. I feel like I thrive whenever there is a big total on the board. You need to take charge early and create momentum for the team,” said Iyer.

Iyer acknowledged his away form has been notably better, but added that consistency in mindset and training has made the difference.

“I don’t want to curse it [my away form]—I stay present and react to the ball. I’ve worked a lot in the nets, especially facing the new ball. That has given me immense confidence. It’s all about attitude and ticking small boxes,” he explained.

Reflecting on PBKS’ batting strategy, Iyer said the team had a clear plan to attack early and not leave things for the final overs against CSK’s seasoned death bowlers.

“Coach Ricky Ponting discussed increasing the intensity. Our plan was to take the game deep but not let it slip. Prabh and Priyansh have been exceptional, and they’re not just slogging—they’re smart about their shots.”

Earlier in the game, CSK posted 190 after a top-class knock of 88 from Sam Curran, supported by Dewald Brevis (32). But a Yuzvendra Chahal hat-trick (4/32) derailed CSK’s finish, preventing them from reaching 200.

In response, PBKS’ chase was bolstered by a 44-run opening stand between Prabhsimran Singh (54 off 36) and Priyansh Arya, followed by a 72-run partnership between Prabhsimran and Iyer. Despite a few late wickets, the visitors crossed the line with two balls to spare.

Khaleel Ahmed (2/28) and Matheesha Pathirana (2/45) were the standout bowlers for CSK.

PBKS now sit comfortably in second place with 13 points from 10 matches (6 wins, 3 losses, 1 NR), while CSK remain at the bottom with just 4 points and a forgettable home record of five losses at Chepauk this season.
