IPL 2025: “Still Hitting Sixes at 43: Dhoni’s Presence Is Priceless” – Gaikwad

CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad hails MS Dhoni’s enduring influence and fitness ahead of IPL 2025 opener against Mumbai Indians, calling his contribution “remarkable” even at 43.

Chennai, March 23: Ahead of Chennai Super Kings’ high-voltage IPL 2025 opener against Mumbai Indians, skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad opened up about MS Dhoni’s current role, legacy, and future in the franchise. At 43, Dhoni remains the heart and soul of CSK, despite transitioning into a more focused finisher’s role in recent seasons.

Describing Dhoni’s training regimen and fitness, Gaikwad said the legendary wicketkeeper-batsman trains with precision, targeting his role with purpose. “His training is very much limited to whatever he tries to achieve. He focuses on trying to hit as many sixes as possible and getting the right swing. He’s still in great shape,” Gaikwad told reporters.

Though Dhoni now typically bats in the final overs, his power-hitting remains intact. “I never thought he was out of shape, even on day one. He’s done it for so many years—it’s special. Even Sachin Tendulkar still bats brilliantly at 51, so Dhoni definitely has many more years to go,” Gaikwad added with admiration.

Earlier this year, Dhoni reflected on his early cricketing days and spoke about approaching the game with the same joy and innocence he had as a child. “I want to enjoy it like I did back in school—playing at 4 PM with no pressure, just for the love of the game,” Dhoni said at a public event. “Easier said than done, but that’s the goal.”

Despite reduced time at the crease, Dhoni’s presence remains a major motivator for the squad. “Every day we get to see him inspires us. New players sometimes struggle to strike the ball like he does right now,” Gaikwad said. “At 43, what he’s doing is remarkable—it lifts the entire group.”

With Dhoni still actively mentoring, hitting big, and leading by example, CSK enters IPL 2025 with the same aura that has defined their five-title legacy. And for Gaikwad and his young squad, the Captain Cool’s shadow is still the biggest source of light.
