US-sanctioned tanker shifts destination, raising questions over India’s potential crude import from Iran

April 3, 2026: A US-sanctioned tanker carrying Iranian crude oil has changed its course mid-voyage, switching its declared destination from India to China. The Aframax vessel Ping Shun, which had earlier signalled Vadinar in Gujarat as its destination, is now indicating Dongying in China, according to ship-tracking data. The move casts uncertainty over what could have been India’s first import of Iranian crude since 2019, when purchases were halted due to US sanctions.

According to analysts, the sudden rerouting may be linked to changes in payment terms rather than logistical issues. Experts note that sellers are increasingly shifting away from extended credit periods of 30–60 days to upfront or near-term payments, making transactions more complex. While the vessel’s current tracking points to China, its final destination remains unconfirmed, as AIS signals can change during transit.

The development highlights the sensitivity of Iranian oil trade under sanctions. Vadinar, the tanker’s initial destination, houses a major refinery operated by Nayara Energy and backed by Rosneft. Analysts say that if financial terms are resolved, the cargo could still be redirected to India. However, authorities have maintained that any decision to resume Iranian crude imports will depend on commercial viability amid the evolving sanctions landscape.
