Irfan Pathan Criticizes Virat Kohli’s Form: Questions Lack of Domestic Cricket and Technical Flaws

Irfan Pathan calls out Virat Kohli’s poor performances in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, urges focus on domestic cricket, and suggests consulting cricketing legends for guidance.

Sydney [Australia], January 5: Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has voiced sharp criticism of Virat Kohli’s form following India’s 1-3 series defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Pathan pointed out Kohli’s technical flaws, lack of domestic cricket participation, and the adverse impact of his performance on the Indian team’s overall results.

Despite a historic win in Perth, India failed to capitalize on their early advantage, with their batting lineup—particularly senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma—faltering against Australia’s disciplined bowling attack.

Pathan on Kohli’s Form and Domestic Cricket

Speaking to Star Sports, Pathan emphasized the need for players, including senior stalwarts like Kohli, to prioritize domestic cricket to refine their skills.

“Many players had the opportunity to play domestic cricket, but they chose not to. The culture needs to change. Even legends like Sachin Tendulkar played Ranji Trophy to stay sharp. Virat must follow that example,” Pathan stated.

Highlighting Kohli’s first-innings average of just 15 in 2024, Pathan questioned whether Kohli’s current form justified his place in the team.

“For five years, Virat’s average hasn’t crossed 30. If a youngster delivers the same numbers, wouldn’t we give him a chance? It’s about the team, not individual reputation,” he remarked.

Technical Flaws and Seeking Guidance

Pathan didn’t hold back while addressing Kohli’s recurring technical issues, particularly his vulnerability outside the off-stump.

“You’re getting out the same way repeatedly. When will you fix the technical flaw? Legends like Sunil Gavaskar are around—how long does it take to have a conversation with him?” Pathan questioned.

Respect for Kohli’s Legacy, But Focus on Team Goals

While Pathan acknowledged Kohli’s immense contributions to Indian cricket, he stressed that past performances cannot be the sole reason for a player’s continued selection.

“Virat has done a lot for Indian cricket. But right now, it’s about team performance. Reputation cannot carry a player forward indefinitely,” Pathan said.

The Series Recap

In the final SCG Test, India struggled once again after winning the toss and opting to bat. Despite gritty efforts from Rishabh Pant (40), Ravindra Jadeja (26), and Jasprit Bumrah (22), India was bowled out for 185. Scott Boland (4/31) and Mitchell Starc (3/49) dominated the Indian batting lineup.

Australia, despite early hiccups, chased down 162 runs with contributions from Usman Khawaja (41), *Travis Head (34), and *Beau Webster (39).

While Boland was named Player of the Match for his outstanding ten-wicket haul, Jasprit Bumrah claimed the Player of the Series award with 32 wickets across five Tests.

With the Border-Gavaskar Trophy concluded, the focus now shifts to India’s next big challenge—the Test series against England in June. The spotlight remains on whether Kohli can bounce back or if India will consider transitioning to younger talents.
