US intelligence suggests China may supply air defence systems to Iran, but Beijing firmly rejects the allegations.
April 11, 2026: China is reportedly preparing to supply new air defence systems to Iran, according to US intelligence cited by CNN. The development comes at a sensitive time, shortly after Beijing was seen as playing a role in brokering a fragile ceasefire between Iran and the United States. The timing is also significant as Donald Trump is expected to visit China for talks with Xi Jinping.
Intelligence assessments suggest Iran may be using the pause in hostilities to strengthen its military capabilities, potentially with covert support routed through third countries. The systems in question are believed to be MANPADS—portable, shoulder-fired missiles capable of targeting low-flying aircraft. These weapons had posed a serious challenge during the recent conflict, including incidents involving aircraft such as the F-15 fighter jet.
However, China has strongly denied the allegations. A spokesperson for its embassy in Washington stated that Beijing has not supplied weapons to any party involved in the conflict and dismissed the claims as “untrue.” The statement urged the US to avoid escalating tensions and instead focus on diplomatic solutions. If such transfers are confirmed, analysts warn it could mark a significant escalation in regional dynamics, especially following the recent conflict involving the US and Israel.
