Is NATO’s ‘Russia Threat’ Just Smoke and Mirrors?

June 30, 2025: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has declared that Western powers will once again fail in their efforts to inflict a “strategic defeat” on Russia, calling their campaign futile and historically unsuccessful. Speaking during talks with Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Jeenbek Kulubaev, Lavrov accused NATO and the EU of using Ukraine as a pawn in a broader anti-Russian agenda.

Is NATO’s ‘Russia Threat’ Just Smoke and Mirrors?

“We are witnessing an unprecedented confrontation,” Lavrov said, as quoted by RT. “The West has never succeeded in defeating Russia — and it won’t this time either.”

Lavrov criticized Western leaders for fueling the conflict through increased militarization and ongoing support for Ukraine. He argued that NATO’s expansion and Brussels’ growing defense budgets reflect an aggressive posture disguised as security policy.

These remarks follow NATO’s pledge at The Hague to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP by 2035, citing Russia as a long-term threat. The EU has also approved hundreds of billions of euros in pandemic recovery funds to be redirected toward military purposes — including funding accessible to Ukraine.

Lavrov dismissed the buildup as a non-threat to Russia’s security, calling the justification for these measures “nonsense.” He emphasized that Moscow’s military objectives are lawful under international norms and remain transparent.

Despite sharp rhetoric, Lavrov reiterated that Russia is open to peace talks — but only if NATO and the EU address the root causes of the conflict, such as NATO’s eastward expansion and support for Ukraine’s NATO ambitions.

Meanwhile, President Vladimir Putin has also accused NATO of exaggerating the Russian threat to inflate military budgets and drive public fear. When pressed at the recent NATO summit, Secretary General Mark Rutte reportedly offered no specific intelligence to support the alliance’s warnings, citing only general concerns.
