Israel-Iran Escalation Live Update: Iran Downs Israeli Drone

Tel Aviv, June 18, 2025: In a major escalation of hostilities, Iran has reportedly shot down an Israeli drone over Isfahan, according to Iranian state media — a rare and significant claim amid ongoing tensions. Footage aired by Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB shows what appears to be the wreckage of a Hermes 900 drone, widely used by the Israeli Air Force.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have not officially responded to the claim. Historically, Israel has denied similar assertions from Tehran when not supported by independent evidence.

In apparent retaliation, the Israeli Air Force launched targeted strikes on five Iranian AH-1 attack helicopters stationed at an airbase in Kermanshah. IDF Spokesperson Brigadier General Effie Defrin said in a press conference, “Their mission was to try and harm our aircraft.” The IDF released video evidence of the successful strikes.

The conflict further deepened as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed Israeli airstrikes on two critical nuclear-related sites in Iran: the TESA complex in Karaj and the Tehran Research Centre.

These sites were part of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the 2015 Iran nuclear deal that placed limits on Tehran’s nuclear enrichment capabilities.

“At the Tehran site, one building was hit where advanced centrifuge rotors were manufactured and tested,” the IAEA posted on X. “At Karaj, two buildings were destroyed where different centrifuge components were manufactured.”

The TESA complex has long been under surveillance by international monitors, especially after a 2021 incident where Iran accused Israel of sabotaging the facility and damaging IAEA surveillance equipment.

Since Friday, the Israeli Air Force has reportedly struck over 1,100 Iranian targets across multiple regions in Iran — marking one of the most intense Israeli military operations on Iranian soil in recent years.

Adding to the regional instability, Israeli jets also struck more than 75 targets in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, as reported by The Times of Israel. These operations underscore Israel’s multi-front response strategy, targeting threats from both Iran and Palestinian militant factions.

Strategic Implications:
The rapid sequence of military exchanges raises alarms about broader regional escalation, with Israel signaling a robust posture against threats to its air assets and nuclear security concerns. The international community is closely watching developments, especially given the damaged IAEA-monitored nuclear facilities and the intensifying cross-border operations.
