Israeli Government Approves Ceasefire and Hostage Deal with Hamas
Tel Aviv [Israel], January 18: The Israeli government has officially approved a ceasefire and hostage release agreement with Hamas. According to the Times of Israel, the deal was approved in a cabinet vote of 24-8 during the early hours of Saturday and is scheduled to take effect on Sunday.
This agreement marks the start of the first phase of a ceasefire in Gaza, which will include the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners.
The agreement follows prolonged negotiations mediated by the US and Qatar, who announced on Wednesday that a resolution to the 15-month war had been reached. The conflict was triggered by Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attacks, which claimed over 1,200 Israeli civilian lives and led to the abduction of more than 250 individuals.
Israel’s retaliatory strikes in Gaza targeted Hamas units but faced international criticism due to significant civilian casualties. According to Gaza’s health ministry, over 45,000 people, including women and children, have lost their lives in the conflict.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces mounting pressure from his far-right coalition allies to maintain military operations, with concerns that the second phase of the agreement might not proceed. Families of the remaining hostages are particularly anxious about their loved ones remaining in captivity if subsequent negotiations falter.
Negotiations teams from Israel and Hamas signed the deal in Doha on Friday, clearing final hurdles. As the ceasefire takes effect, all eyes remain on the efforts to secure lasting peace and rebuild Gaza.
