Italy and Netherlands Secure Spots for ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026; Scotland Misses Out in Last-Ball Thriller

The Hague [Netherlands], July 12:
In a dramatic finish to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Europe Qualifiers, Italy created history by qualifying for the T20 World Cup for the first time, despite a loss to the Netherlands on Friday. The Netherlands also confirmed their place in next year’s marquee event after defeating Italy by nine wickets at The Hague.

The final day saw four teams — Italy, Netherlands, Scotland, and Jersey — in contention for the last two European qualification spots for the tournament, to be held in India and Sri Lanka in 2026.

Jersey’s Last-Ball Thriller Knocks Out Scotland

Earlier in the day, Jersey delivered a stunning last-ball win over Scotland, chasing down a target of 134 runs to win by one wicket. The upset was especially crushing for Scotland, who had qualified for the last four editions of the T20 World Cup. With the win, Jersey equaled Italy’s points tally (5 points each) but were edged out by Italy’s superior Net Run Rate (NRR).

Italy’s Gritty Performance Despite Loss

Despite losing to the Netherlands, Italy’s calculated approach ensured they kept the net run rate advantage intact. After choosing to bat first, Italy struggled early, losing openers Justin Mosca and Emilio Gay within the first three overs. Skipper Joe Burns tried to steady the innings with a 22-run knock, but Italy slipped to 46/4 by the ninth over.

Late fireworks from Benjamin Manenti (30 off 27) and Grant Stewart (25 off 16) helped Italy post 134/7, scoring 33 vital runs in the final three overs.

Netherlands Dominate in Run Chase

In response, the Netherlands came out aggressively, reaching 66/0 in the powerplay. Openers Michael Levitt (34 off 25) and Max O’Dowd put up an 81-run stand, with Levitt eventually dismissed in the eighth over by Crishan Kalugamage. Captain Scott Edwards then joined O’Dowd to chase down the total in 16.2 overs, sealing a nine-wicket win and a World Cup berth.
