“It’s Not Really A Profitable Thing”, Says ‘Deadpool’ Director Tim Miller On How Much He Made As A Director From This Film

December 25, 2024: Tim Miller, the director of Deadpool (2016), recently opened up about his earnings for helming the hit superhero film, shedding light on the financial realities faced by first-time directors in Hollywood. Despite the massive success of the film—grossing over $782 million worldwide—Miller revealed that his compensation for directing the movie was $225,000 for two years of work. While it might seem like a significant sum, Miller explained that it didn’t feel like a windfall, especially given the lengthy production process.

In his comments, Miller acknowledged that first-time directors are often paid modestly for their work, despite the potential for the film to become a global hit. He shared an anecdote about his agent’s reaction to his pay, saying, “My agent said, ‘Dude, you make more on an episode of The Walking Dead.'” This highlights how, in Hollywood, directors who are relatively unknown may not reap the financial rewards that their films generate, particularly with regards to box-office earnings.

Miller also expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and the success of Deadpool, calling himself “uniquely fortunate” to be part of such a popular franchise. However, he admitted to wishing that his director deals included a share of the film’s merchandising profits, which are often a significant source of revenue for blockbuster films.

After the success of the first Deadpool, a sequel, Deadpool 2, was released in 2018, with David Leitch taking over as director. Following the Disney-Fox merger in 2017, the Deadpool character was integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), with a third installment released in 2024, directed by Shawn Levy, featuring both Deadpool and Wolverine.

Miller’s comments reflect a broader trend in the industry where the financial rewards for directors, especially first-timers, don’t always align with the massive success of their projects. Nonetheless, his involvement in Deadpool cemented his place in Hollywood, and his legacy continues with the franchise’s expansion into the MCU.
