Congress leader urges Modi government to clarify stance on US President’s controversial remarks
New Delhi, February 6: Congress General Secretary in-charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, on Wednesday strongly criticized US President Donald Trump’s remarks about “taking over” the Gaza Strip, calling his statements “bizarre, dangerous, and totally unacceptable.”
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Ramesh asserted that the only viable path to peace in West Asia was a two-state solution that guarantees both Palestinian independence and Israel’s security.
“President Trump’s loud thinking on the future of Gaza is bizarre, dangerous, and totally unacceptable. A two-state solution that fulfills the completely legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people to lead a life in independence and dignity, and also ensures security for Israel, is the ONLY basis for sustainable peace in West Asia,” Ramesh posted.
He further demanded that the Modi government clarify its stance on the issue, stating,
“The Modi Govt. must make its position absolutely clear. Other Govts have done so already.”
Global Backlash Against Trump’s Gaza Proposal
US President Donald Trump, during a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, announced that the United States would “take over” the Gaza Strip, dismantle weapons, remove destroyed buildings, and work toward economic development in the area.
His statement has triggered strong international condemnation, particularly from Palestinian leaders and groups.
Hamas Calls Trump’s Plan ‘Ridiculous and Absurd’
Senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri dismissed Trump’s comments as a “recipe for chaos and tension.”
“Trump’s remarks about his desire to control Gaza are ridiculous and absurd, and any ideas of this kind are capable of igniting the region,” he said.
Hamas spokesperson Abdel Latif al-Qanou echoed this sentiment, stating that the “racist stance” of the US aligns with the Israeli extreme right in attempting to displace Palestinians.
Palestinian Leaders Reject Trump’s Proposal
Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Secretary-General Hussein al-Sheikh reaffirmed the Palestinian leadership’s firm opposition to displacement, urging a return to the internationally recognized two-state solution.
“The Palestinian leadership affirms its firm position that the two-state solution, in accordance with international legitimacy and international law, is the guarantee of security, stability, and peace,” al-Sheikh posted on X.
Palestinian representative to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, further argued that Palestinians in Gaza should be allowed to return to their original homes in Israel.
Modi Government Yet to Respond
While several governments have already condemned Trump’s controversial Gaza takeover remarks, the Indian government has not yet issued an official response.
With India maintaining diplomatic ties with both Israel and Palestine, Jairam Ramesh’s demand for clarity could put pressure on the Modi administration to take a stand on the unfolding developments in West Asia.
