Jammu And Kashmir Experiences ‘Chillai Kalan’, Doda Transforms Into Winter Wonderland

January 19, 2025: Jammu and Kashmir is currently experiencing Chillai Kalan, a 40-day period of intense winter, marked by sub-zero temperatures, heavy snowfall, and freezing water bodies. This is especially noticeable in areas like Bhalessa in Doda, which has been transformed into a winter wonderland due to a fresh spell of snow.

The capital city of Srinagar is enduring freezing temperatures, with a recorded temperature of 4.1°C, while nearby areas like Gulmarg and Pahalgam are seeing even colder temperatures, with readings of -1.6°C and 0.6°C, respectively. During Chillai Kalan, the region typically experiences the freezing of lakes like Dal Lake, and daily life is often disrupted by the extreme cold.

Meanwhile, in Delhi-NCR, dense fog has caused disruptions in daily life and travel. At least 41 trains were running late due to the fog, which reduced visibility. The air quality in Delhi is also concerning, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 340, classified as “very poor.” The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a minimum temperature of 10°C for the national capital. To assist those affected by the cold, Delhi’s Urban Shelter Improvement Board has set up 235 night shelters for homeless individuals.

Other parts of North India, including Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and North Rajasthan, are also experiencing dense fog. In Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, dense fog has not deterred devotees from gathering at the Maha Kumbh Mela.

The IMD has indicated that fog conditions will persist in Prayagraj until January 20, after which temperatures may rise slightly. Additionally, the fog in the region is expected to decrease after January 20, with rainfall predicted for the Western Himalayan region starting on January 21, which will help reduce fog and cold conditions in the plains.
