Jasprit Bumrah & Mohammed Siraj: Workload, Wickets, and India’s Pace Dilemma

While Jasprit Bumrah shines with 32 wickets in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Mohammed Siraj emerges as a reliable workhorse, shouldering a heavy bowling workload since 2023.

New Delhi, January 5: Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah delivered an extraordinary performance in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), finishing as the leading wicket-taker with 32 scalps in five matches at an astonishing average of 13.06, including three five-wicket hauls.

While Bumrah grabbed the spotlight, Mohammed Siraj emerged as the unsung hero of the series, showcasing consistency, aggression, and a tireless spirit. Siraj ended the series with 20 wickets at an average of 31.15, including a best performance of 4/98.

Siraj: The Workhorse Behind the Scenes

Siraj bowled a total of 157.1 overs, the highest by an Indian bowler in the series, surpassing even Bumrah’s 151.2 overs. However, Pat Cummins topped the list with 167 overs, finishing the series with 25 wickets at an average of 21.36.

While discussions around Bumrah’s workload management have dominated cricketing circles, Siraj’s bowling workload since the start of 2023 has been largely overlooked.

Since 2023, Siraj has played 57 matches across formats for India, taking 104 wickets at an average of 27.89. With 683.5 overs bowled in this period—the highest for any Indian pacer—Siraj has been a vital cog in India’s pace attack.

How Do Indian Pacers Compare in Workload?

  • Ravindra Jadeja: 830 overs in 56 matches, 115 wickets.
  • Mohammed Siraj: 683.5 overs in 57 matches, 104 wickets.
  • Jasprit Bumrah: 560.1 overs in 42 matches, 124 wickets.
  • Mohammed Shami: 247.3 overs in 23 matches, 53 wickets.

While Jadeja leads the overall workload due to his spin-bowling role, Siraj remains the most hardworking Indian pacer since last year, often spearheading the attack in Bumrah and Shami’s absence.

Balancing Workload and Performance

Despite workload management efforts, Siraj’s heavy bowling burden remains a concern. Known for his passion and aggressive bowling style, Siraj continues to give his all, often being the go-to bowler in crucial moments.

However, questions remain—will Siraj’s workload impact his long-term effectiveness? Can he continue to deliver consistent, match-winning performances across formats?

As India prepares for upcoming international fixtures, Siraj’s resilience and fitness will play a pivotal role in shaping the team’s success.

Only time will tell if Siraj silences his critics and delivers career-defining performances in 2025.
