December 1, 2024: Jay Shah officially began his tenure as the new Chair of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on December 1, 2024.
“The International Cricket Council (ICC) today – 1 December – marked the beginning of Jay Shah’s tenure as ICC Chair,” an ICC statement read.
As he takes on this prominent role, Shah outlined key priorities for his leadership, including leveraging cricket’s inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games as a significant opportunity to broaden the sport’s global appeal. Additionally, he emphasized the need to accelerate the growth of women’s cricket, which remains a vital area of development for the sport’s future.
In his statement, Shah expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him by the ICC Directors and Member Boards, and underscored the exciting prospects ahead for cricket. He highlighted the critical juncture the sport faces with the coexistence of multiple formats, all while working to make cricket more inclusive and engaging for a global fanbase.
Shah brings substantial experience in cricket administration, having started his journey in 2009 with the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA), where he was instrumental in overseeing the development of the world’s largest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad. In 2019, he joined the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as its youngest-ever honorary secretary, gaining further prominence in the cricketing world.
He succeeds Greg Barclay, who served as ICC Chair from 2020 to 2024. Shah acknowledged Barclay’s leadership and the milestones achieved during his tenure, adding that he was excited to build on those successes while driving the sport to new heights on the global stage.
Shah’s unopposed election to the position of ICC Chairman in August 2024 followed Barclay’s decision not to seek a third term.
