Jimmy Carter, Longest-Living US President, Passes Away at 100

Remembering Jimmy Carter: From Farmer to President, A Legacy of Peace, Diplomacy, and Humanitarianism

Georgia [US], December 30: Former US President Jimmy Carter, the longest-living president in US history, passed away at the age of 100 on Sunday at his home in Plains, Georgia, according to The Washington Post, citing his son James E. Carter III.

While the immediate cause of death was not disclosed, Carter had been under hospice care since February 2023 following multiple hospital visits. He was previously treated for an aggressive form of melanoma skin cancer, which had spread to his liver and brain.

Carter was last publicly seen on October 1, celebrating his 100th birthday with family and friends at his home, as military aircraft flew overhead in tribute.

A Life of Service and Dedication

Born in a small town in Georgia, Carter’s journey began as a peanut farmer and US Navy veteran. He served as the Governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975 before becoming the 39th President of the United States in 1977—the first president from the Deep South since 1837 and the only Democrat elected between Lyndon B. Johnson and Bill Clinton.

Key Achievements as President

Carter is best remembered for brokering the historic Camp David Accords in 1978, which led to a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt and marked the first significant Israeli withdrawal from territories occupied during the 1967 Six-Day War.

In 2002, Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his “decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, advance democracy, and promote human rights.”

His presidency also saw the ratification of the Panama Canal Treaties, transferring control of the canal to Panama and improving US relations with Latin American neighbors.

Additionally, Carter established full diplomatic relations with China and made human rights a cornerstone of US foreign policy—a move that remains influential to this day.

A Lasting Legacy

Beyond politics, Carter continued his humanitarian work through the Carter Center, focusing on healthcare, democracy, and conflict resolution worldwide.

Carter’s life was a testament to service, humility, and relentless commitment to global peace, leaving behind a legacy that transcends borders and generations.
