While the immediate cause of death was not disclosed, Carter had been under hospice care since February 2023 following multiple hospital visits. He was previously treated for an aggressive form of melanoma skin cancer, which had spread to his liver and brain.

Born in a small town in Georgia, Carter’s journey began as a peanut farmer and US Navy veteran. He served as the Governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975 before becoming the 39th President of the United States in 1977—the first president from the Deep South since 1837 and the only Democrat elected between Lyndon B.
