Biden’s Final Address as President

In his farewell address delivered from the Oval Office, Joe Biden highlighted the achievements of his administration while cautioning against the growing threats posed by wealth concentration, misinformation, and technological advancements. Reflecting on his four-year term, Biden described the rise of an “oligarchy of extreme wealth and power” as a fundamental threat to American democracy.

“Today, an oligarchy is taking shape in America… threatening our democracy, basic rights, and a fair shot for everyone,” he stated, alluding to the influence wielded by billionaires closely aligned with incoming President Donald Trump, including Elon Musk and others.

Concerns Over Technology and Disinformation

Biden drew parallels to former President Dwight Eisenhower’s 1961 warning about the military-industrial complex, emphasising the risks of a “tech-industrial complex” in the modern era. He expressed alarm over the role of artificial intelligence (AI), describing it as both the “most consequential technology of our time” and a significant risk to society, the economy, and security.

He further criticised the deteriorating state of media and social platforms, stating,
“Americans are buried under an avalanche of misinformation, enabling the abuse of power. The truth is smothered by lies told for power and profit.”
Biden urged for accountability from social media platforms to safeguard families, children, and democracy.

Climate and Global Challenges

The President underscored the importance of environmental protections, criticizing plans by the incoming administration to reverse progress on the climate crisis. Biden warned that unchecked corporate interests could undo vital steps toward combating global warming.
“Powerful forces are wielding unchecked influence to eliminate the steps we’ve taken to tackle the climate crisis,” he remarked.

A Ceasefire and a Mixed Legacy

Biden also highlighted his administration’s efforts in negotiating a ceasefire and hostage deal involving Hamas after months of negotiation, describing it as a major diplomatic achievement.

However, Biden leaves office with mixed approval ratings, ending his term on January 20, as Donald Trump is set to be inaugurated as the 47th President.
