Jos Buttler sets new record for most T20I runs against India

England captain surpasses Nicholas Pooran’s record during the second T20I in Chennai, joining the elite 600-run club against a single opponent.

Chennai, January 26: England skipper Jos Buttler etched his name in the history books by becoming the highest T20 International run-scorer against India. Buttler surpassed West Indies batter Nicholas Pooran during the second T20I of the India-England series at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, as per Wisden.

England, aiming to recover from their eight-wicket loss in the series opener in Kolkata, were put to bat by Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav after winning the toss. The visitors had a shaky start, losing Phil Salt in the first over. However, Buttler took charge, smashing a quickfire 45 off 30 balls before being dismissed by Axar Patel.

A Record-Breaking Milestone

With his innings, Buttler crossed the 600-run mark against India in T20Is, becoming the first player to achieve this milestone. He now has 611 runs against India, surpassing Nicholas Pooran’s tally of 592 runs. While it took Buttler 17 matches to reach this milestone, Pooran achieved his in 13 games.

Buttler’s feat places him among an elite group of players with over 500 T20I runs against India, including Glenn Maxwell (574), David Miller (524), and Aaron Finch (500). Additionally, Buttler becomes only the 13th player in T20I history to score over 600 runs against a single opponent.

Among T20I records, only Virat Kohli (794 runs vs. Australia) and Babar Azam (880 runs vs. New Zealand) have surpassed the 700-run mark against a single team.

England’s Efforts in Vain

Despite Buttler’s commendable knock and England posting 165/6, their efforts fell short as Tilak Varma’s unbeaten half-century powered India to a thrilling win, securing a 2-0 series lead.

Reflecting on the game, Buttler lauded his team’s aggression despite the loss:
“Great game. Really exciting end. Credit to Tilak for getting them over the line. We created a lot of chances and really pushed them close. Really pleased with the way we went about with the bat. There was the aggression we asked for, nearly a defendable score,” he said.

With England trailing in the five-match series, Buttler’s form remains a beacon of hope as they aim to turn the tide in the upcoming matches.
