Julianne Hough discusses impact of coming out as ‘not straight’

Julianne Hough, the beloved host of Dancing with the Stars, has once again opened up about her journey of self-discovery and her experience of coming out as part of the LGBTQ+ community. In a candid conversation on The Jamie Kern Lima Show podcast, Hough, 36, reflected on the emotional and empowering process she first publicly disclosed in a 2019 Women’s Health article, as reported by People magazine.

“Coming out is one of the most vulnerable and empowering things that you can do,” Hough remarked during the podcast. She elaborated on her evolving understanding of love and attraction, saying, “I think I’m just learning like what love is and I love people and I don’t know what I’m attracted to, but I choose you.”

Hough emphasized her appreciation for the essence and beauty of individuals, looking beyond mere physical attraction. According to People magazine, she spoke about how her journey has taught her to value the deeper connections she forms with others.

Hough’s initial revelation in August 2019 also involved her then-husband, NHL player Brooks Laich. She recalled the moment she shared her truth with him, saying, “You know I’m not straight, right?” His response, one of surprise, ultimately led to a deeper intimacy in their relationship. Hough noted, “I think there’s a safety with my husband now that I’m unpacking all of this.”

Despite the overwhelming support she received from the public, friends, and family, Hough acknowledged that not everyone is as fortunate. “I’m super grateful for my family, my friends, and the support from all my fans,” she said, expressing a desire to extend that support to others who might not have it.

Following her separation from Laich in 2020, Hough has continued to openly discuss the dynamics of their relationship. In a recent interview on Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard, she reflected on their marriage, expressing both acceptance and regret. “We both have regrets that it didn’t work out because I don’t think we had the maturity to come together,” Hough shared.

Julianne Hough’s journey serves as an inspiration to many, as she continues to embrace her true self and share her story with the world.
