Karachi Records Nearly 9,000 Traffic Accidents in 2024, Over 770 Lives Lost

Karachi [Pakistan], December 25: Karachi witnessed nearly 9,000 traffic accidents in 2024, resulting in 771 fatalities and injuries to 8,174 individuals, according to a report released by rescue services and cited by ARY News.

Monthly Breakdown of Accidents and Casualties:

  • January: 94 deaths, 734 injuries
  • February: 57 deaths, 720 injuries
  • March: 49 deaths, 521 injuries
  • April: 64 deaths, 490 injuries
  • May: 48 deaths, 464 injuries
  • June: 73 deaths, 649 injuries
  • July: 35 deaths, 627 injuries
  • August: 45 deaths, 521 injuries
  • September: 70 deaths, 781 injuries
  • October: 66 deaths, 980 injuries
  • November: 90 deaths, 989 injuries
  • December (to date): 80 deaths, 700 injuries

Daily Averages and Alarming Trends:

The report reveals that, on average, 25 traffic accidents occur daily, leading to 2-3 fatalities every day.

In 2023, Karachi reported over 1,400 deaths and 18,000 injuries from road accidents, with many survivors suffering permanent disabilities.

Major Causes of Accidents:

  • Overspeeding: Identified as the primary factor in most accidents.
  • Lack of Helmet Use: Motorbike riders remain highly vulnerable due to non-compliance with safety regulations.

Need for Improved Traffic Safety Measures:

The recurring pattern of traffic-related fatalities and injuries in Karachi underscores an urgent need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws, improved public awareness campaigns, and better infrastructure planning to enhance road safety across the city.
