Ahead of the Delhi Assembly Elections, AAP leader warns voters of alleged threats to free education, healthcare, and electricity under BJP rule.
New Delhi [India], January 21: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal launched a sharp critique of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) manifesto for the upcoming Delhi assembly elections, labeling it as “dangerous” for the city and the country.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Kejriwal claimed that the BJP’s recently released “Sankalp Patras” outlined plans that could jeopardize free education, electricity, and healthcare in Delhi.
“Dangerous Promises”
“BJP has released two Sankalp Patras so far, both are dangerous for Delhi and the country. They have stated their intention to stop mohalla clinics, free education, and free electricity if they come to power,” Kejriwal asserted.
He warned that the BJP’s manifesto proposed limiting free education in government schools to “needy students” alone. “This will disturb the home budgets of ordinary families. Voting for the BJP would push people into financial distress,” Kejriwal said.
Free Education and Healthcare Under Threat
Kejriwal emphasized that the AAP government’s initiatives in education had transformed Delhi’s public schools, benefiting 1.8 million children. He alleged that the BJP’s manifesto aimed to dismantle these achievements, stating, “We have made education free in Delhi. If BJP comes to power, they will end free education, healthcare, and electricity services.”
BJP’s Counter-Proposals
On the same day, BJP released the second part of its Sankalp Patra. Among the promises were free education for students in government institutions, life insurance for auto-rickshaw drivers and domestic workers, and a welfare board for their benefit. The manifesto also proposed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe alleged corruption during the AAP government’s tenure.
BJP MP Anurag Thakur launched the manifesto, emphasizing reforms and welfare measures for marginalized sections.
Electoral Landscape
Delhi’s assembly elections, scheduled for February 5, have 699 candidates contesting for 70 seats. Counting of votes will take place on February 8.
The AAP, which swept the 2015 and 2020 elections with 67 and 62 seats respectively, faces a resurgent BJP, which managed only three seats in 2015 and eight in 2020. The Congress, once a dominant force with 15 consecutive years in power, has struggled to secure a single seat in the last two assembly elections.
