KKR Miss Two Key Spinners Due to Health Concerns

Kolkata Knight Riders were forced to make two major changes to their playing XI ahead of their Indian Premier League 2026 clash against Punjab Kings, with star spinners Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy ruled out due to health issues.

Captain Ajinkya Rahane confirmed at the toss that the changes were unavoidable. Chakravarthy suffered an injury while attempting a catch during the previous match, while Narine was unavailable after falling ill.

“Two changes, forced changes. Varun Chakravarthy unfortunately got injured while taking a catch in the last game, and Sunil Narine is sick. Rovman Powell and Navdeep Saini are in,” Rahane said.

Rahane Opts to Bat First After Winning Toss

After winning the toss, Rahane elected to bat first, citing favourable pitch conditions.

He observed that the wicket appeared slightly dry with less grass cover, making it suitable for batting early and putting runs on the board.

“We are going to bat first. It looks like a good wicket, a little bit on the drier side, but it’s a very good wicket with slightly less grass covering as well. That’s the reason to put runs on the board first,” Rahane explained.

He also stressed the importance of belief and execution in tight T20 contests.

“It’s all about having that belief and confidence. Preparation-wise, we’ve been fantastic. It’s about winning the small moments in the T20 format and giving your best,” he added.

KKR Seek First Win After Poor Start

KKR entered the match under pressure after losing their opening two matches of the season. The absence of Narine and Chakravarthy—both key figures in the spin department—adds to their challenge.

To fill the gap, the team brought in Rovman Powell and Navdeep Saini, hoping the replacements can help turn their campaign around.

Meanwhile, Punjab Kings, who have started the season strongly with back-to-back wins, decided to stick with the same playing XI from their previous match.
