Delhi Capitals left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav believes that staying true to one’s strengths and maintaining an attacking mindset are essential for spinners to succeed in high-scoring T20 matches.

Speaking ahead of a match, Kuldeep emphasised that bowlers often drift away from their natural game when put under pressure by aggressive batters. However, he stressed that sticking to one’s core strengths is key to long-term success.

“Whenever a batter puts you under pressure, there’s a tendency to look for safer options. But I believe you should always focus on your strengths,” Kuldeep said.

He explained that his approach revolves around reading the batter’s mindset and staying one step ahead. “I assess how a batter plays, what his strengths are, and what the situation demands. Then I try to predict what he’s expecting from me and plan accordingly,” he added.

Since joining Delhi Capitals in 2022, Kuldeep has established himself as one of the most effective spinners in the IPL. He picked up 21 wickets in his debut season with the franchise — his best return in a single edition — and has consistently led the spin attack alongside Axar Patel.

He continued his strong performances in recent seasons, finishing as DC’s top wicket-taker in IPL 2025 with 15 wickets, following a 16-wicket haul in 2024. His international form has also been impressive, as he emerged as the leading wicket-taker in the 2025 Men’s T20 Asia Cup with 17 scalps.

Despite limited opportunities during India’s T20 World Cup-winning campaign, Kuldeep credited his preparation and mindset for staying ready. “Even if you don’t get matches, your preparation becomes very important. I always prepare as if I have to play the next game,” he said.

According to him, maintaining a consistent routine helps players stay in rhythm and deliver when opportunities arise. “Confidence comes from preparation. If your training is good and your routine is set, confidence follows naturally,” he explained.

Kuldeep also spoke about the challenges of T20 cricket, where conditions and match situations can vary significantly. He pointed out that bowlers should not assume every game will be high-scoring and must adapt based on the pitch and opposition.

“In T20s, it’s usually one batter who takes you on, not the whole team. You have to be ready for that challenge while sticking to your strengths,” he noted, adding that handling pressure is crucial for growth.

Discussing different playing conditions, Kuldeep highlighted how venues influence the game. “In Delhi, you might get flat tracks, while places like Lucknow or Chennai may assist bowlers. Adapting to these variations is part of the game,” he said.

Reflecting on his personal life, Kuldeep also shared that he is enjoying a new phase after his marriage to Vanshika. “I really enjoyed the wedding. Cricket brings a different kind of pressure, but I’m enjoying my second innings in life,” he said with a smile.

With his consistent performances and clear mindset, Kuldeep continues to play a vital role in Delhi Capitals’ bowling attack, aiming to make an impact in IPL 2026.
