Kylian Mbappé on Finding Success at Real Madrid: “I Knew I Had to Do Better”

The French star reflects on overcoming early struggles, embracing pressure, and adapting to life at Real Madrid.

Madrid [Spain], January 22: Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé has opened up about his challenging transition to life in Spain after his much-anticipated move from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) last summer. The French star admitted that a shift in his mindset was crucial to thriving at one of the most demanding clubs in world football.

Mbappé endured a rocky start in Madrid, struggling with injuries and adapting to the intense expectations. However, since November, the forward has hit a rich vein of form, netting 10 goals in 14 appearances and taking his season tally to 18 goals.

“It was more mental. I told myself I had to do better. I knew it. There was a moment of, ‘BAM,’ it’s time to change because I didn’t come to Madrid to play badly,” Mbappé shared, according to Goal.com.

The 24-year-old revealed that adjusting to the constant pressure of performing at the highest level and understanding the club’s ethos were instrumental in his resurgence.

“In Madrid, you always have to play well. It’s a dream to wear this shirt. Since day one, I’ve been living a dream. The reason I didn’t come earlier wasn’t the club’s fault or the supporters’ fault; it was mine. Now, I’ve won two titles and am enjoying my time here while learning about Spanish culture.”

Hunger for Greatness

Mbappé’s insatiable drive for success has been evident throughout his career. He reiterated his determination to continually improve, aiming to surpass his achievements each season.

“I will never become a shy player. Coming to Madrid requires humility, but not shyness. I respect the game. If I can score 40 goals, great. If I can score more, even better,” he remarked.

Thriving Under Pressure

Acknowledging the challenges of playing for a club with high expectations, Mbappé expressed his desire to take on pressure and turn criticism into motivation.

“I am the type of player who needs this pressure. Against Celta, people booed us, but that’s normal if you don’t win. Our role is to change those boos. On Sunday, we played well. We have the personality to improve and perform. Let’s not lose our unity. We need everyone to write a new page in history together.”

As Mbappé continues to find his rhythm at Real Madrid, his focus remains on contributing to the team and achieving greatness in the iconic white shirt.
