Maa Box Office Preview: Kajol’s Horror Thriller Eyes ₹3 Crore Opening Amidst Tough Competition

With a runtime of 2 hours 15 minutes and a limited screen count, Kajol’s ‘Maa’ opens in theatres today with modest advance bookings but potential for strong weekend growth.

June 27, 2025Kajol returns to the big screen in the supernatural horror thriller ‘Maa’, directed by Vishal Furia and produced by Ajay Devgn and Jio Studios. As part of the growing Shaitaan cinematic universe, the film marks Kajol’s full-fledged foray into the horror genre and is positioned as a standalone star vehicle in a competitive release window.

Certification and Runtime

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has cleared Maa with a U/A certificate. The approved runtime is 2 hours and 15 minutes, aligning well with the horror genre’s appetite for tight storytelling and suspenseful build-ups.

Released by Panorama Studios, in association with PVR Pictures and Pen Marudhar, Maa has secured an estimated 1,250 to 1,500 screens across India. However, its theatrical spread has been constrained by the ongoing run of Sitaare Zameen Par and a surprise challenger in Brad Pitt’s Formula 1 film F1, both eating into key show slots.

As of Thursday 9 PM, Maa had sold around 10,000 tickets in the top national chains (PVR Inox & Cinepolis), with final pre-sales expected to touch 15,000 tickets.

While the trailer received a positive response and horror is considered the genre-of-the-season, the muted advance is attributed to:

  • Limited showcasing due to stiff competition
  • Late opening of ticket bookings
  • Fragmented promotional reach

Opening Day Estimates

Based on current booking patterns, Maa is projected to earn around ₹3 crore on Day 1 — a respectable figure for a female-led horror film, though below the industry’s expected benchmark of ₹4–5 crore.

If word of mouth turns positive and evening/night show walk-ins improve, the film could see opening day collections push toward ₹4 crore, offering a stronger foundation for the weekend.

Promotions & Offers

A ‘Buy Two Get One Free’ ticketing offer is in effect to encourage footfall, but its impact on pre-sales appears minimal so far.

That said, with the potential for strong walk-ins and genre-driven momentum, the weekend will be critical in determining Maa’s long-term box office prospects.
