Manchester City Sign Nico Gonzalez from Porto in Deadline Day Transfer
Manchester, February 4: Defending Premier League champions Manchester City have officially signed Nico Gonzalez from FC Porto, completing their fourth and final signing of the January transfer window. The 23-year-old Spanish midfielder has joined City on a four-and-a-half-year contract that will keep him at the Etihad until 2029.
Gonzalez becomes the latest addition to Pep Guardiola’s squad, following the arrivals of Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis, and Omar Marmoush in the winter transfer window.
Gonzalez, a product of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, joined the club in 2013 and later progressed to the first team, making 37 appearances. After an impressive loan spell at Valencia, he sealed a permanent move to Porto in 2023, where he made 68 appearances and scored nine goals before attracting interest from Manchester City.
Speaking on his move, Gonzalez expressed his excitement at joining the English champions:
“This is the perfect opportunity for me at this stage of my career. I am 23, and I want to test myself in England. There’s no better club than Manchester City for me to do that.”
“Look at the squad they have here. It’s unbelievable, full of world-class players. There isn’t a footballer in the world who wouldn’t want to be part of this set-up. I know the reputation Pep has, and I cannot wait to work with him. In fact, I am honoured he wants me to play in his team.”
City’s Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain, hailed Gonzalez as an exciting and crucial signing for the club’s ongoing Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and Club World Cup campaigns.
“Nico is a very talented young midfielder. He is an ideal acquisition for Manchester City. It was a difficult transfer to complete because his performances this season have been outstanding, and he has been such an important part of what FC Porto are doing.”
“We are really happy we have managed to get this done before the window closed. He is ready to help us in the second half of the season as we compete in multiple competitions.”
With Manchester City looking to defend their Premier League title and push for another Champions League trophy, Gonzalez’s arrival is expected to bolster their midfield depth and provide Guardiola with another quality option in the center of the park.
