Marco Rubio as US Secretary of State: Trump’s Hawk-Eyed Watchdog on China and Global Dictatorships
January 16, 2025: Marco Rubio, Donald Trump’s pick for the US Secretary of State, has made his stance on China abundantly clear. Known for his hawkish views, Rubio has openly criticised China’s rise to global superpower status, calling it a result of cyber-crimes, espionage, and exploitation of global systems.

In a bold statement, Rubio described China as a “liar, cheat, and thief” while accusing the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) of using the goodwill extended by the US to its advantage. Speaking on China’s role in the global order, he remarked,
“We welcomed the Chinese Communist Party into this global order. They took advantage of all its benefits but ignored all its obligations. Instead, they lied, cheated, hacked, and stolen their way to global superpower status, at our expense.”

Rubio hinted at a significant shift in US foreign policy under Donald Trump’s leadership, stating that the postwar global order is “not just obsolete but a weapon being used against us.” Rejecting the Biden administration’s vision of a US-led “liberal world order,” Rubio emphasized Trump’s “America First” approach, where decisions will prioritize the safety, strength, and prosperity of the US.
“From January 20, all foreign policy decisions will be made based on whether they make the United States safer, stronger, and more prosperous,” Rubio declared.

Rubio extended his criticism to other global powers, warning of an alliance among “dictatorships” in Moscow, Tehran, and Pyongyang. Addressing the Russia-Ukraine war, he emphasized the need for bold diplomacy and decisive actions to end the conflict swiftly.
“The dictators of Moscow, Tehran, and Pyongyang sow chaos and instability. We will counter them aggressively,” he added.
Marco Rubio’s appointment as Secretary of State marks a historic moment as he becomes the first Hispanic and the first fluent Spanish-speaking individual to hold this position. A son of working-class Cuban immigrants, Rubio’s rise to prominence reflects his dedication to reshaping US foreign policy.
