Mark Carney’s Liberals Set to Form Minority Government in Canada After Tight Race

In a dramatic turnaround, Mark Carney’s Liberal Party is projected to retain power with a minority government, amid heightened US-Canada tensions and renewed patriotism.

Ottawa, April 29, 2025
In a closely fought election, Mark Carney’s Liberal Party is projected to form a minority government in Canada, according to projections from CTV News and CBC.

The Liberals were leading or elected in 155 seats, short of the 172 needed for a majority, while Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives secured 149 seats. The Bloc Québécois, under Yves-François Blanchet, is projected to win 26 seats, and Jagmeet Singh’s NDP is ahead in 11.

Carney had campaigned for a strong mandate to navigate growing tensions with the United States, including President Donald Trump’s trade tariffs and annexation threats, but the results show Canada’s next government will once again be a minority.

🇨🇦 A Stunning Comeback

This result marks one of the most dramatic comebacks in Canadian political history. In early January, when Justin Trudeau announced his resignation, the Liberals were trailing the Conservatives by over 20 points. However, Carney’s leadership and rising nationalistic sentiment after Trump’s attacks helped narrow the gap dramatically.

On election eve, CBC’s poll aggregator placed the Liberals at 42.8% national support, compared to 39.2% for the Conservatives.

📊 Election Day Drama

Election Day unfolded against the backdrop of the Vancouver street fair attack, which halted campaigning briefly over the weekend. Canada’s 29 million eligible voters cast ballots to elect 343 Members of Parliament, with a record 7.3 million having already voted in advance.

Canada spans six time zones, and final polls closed late Monday night, with results trickling in through the evening.

🇺🇸 US Influence and Trump’s Provocation

The election took a sharply nationalist tone after President Trump posted on social media that Canada should become the “51st state” of the United States, falsely claiming that the US subsidises Canada.

Both major Canadian leaders rejected Trump’s remarks:

  • Pierre Poilievre: “President Trump, stay out of our election. Canada will always be proud, sovereign, and independent. We will NEVER be the 51st state.”
  • Mark Carney: “This is Canada, and we decide what happens here.”

Carney, 60, a former central banker, only took over Liberal leadership from Trudeau last month, making this election his first political contest.

🔍 What’s Next?

With a minority government, Carney will now need support from smaller parties such as the NDP and the Bloc Québécois to pass key legislation, particularly on trade and national security.

Both Carney and Poilievre had pledged to renegotiate the free trade deal with the US to stabilize the strained economic relationship.
