Massive Shutter-Down Strike In Pakistan’s Wana, Demands Restoration Of Peace Amid Rising Violence

May 03, 2025 : A large-scale shutter-down strike paralyzed normal life in Wana, the administrative hub of Lower South Waziristan, as thousands protested against the rapidly deteriorating law and order situation. The strike, organized by Muttahida Siyasi Aman Pasoon—a coalition of political and civil groups—received overwhelming support from all major political parties, civil society, business groups, and local residents.

The protest was ignited by a deadly bombing at the office of a so-called peace committee five days ago, which killed 12 people and injured 18. This came shortly after an IED explosion in Azam Warsak that claimed the life of a child and wounded another.

As reported by Dawn, all major markets, including Rustam Bazaar, were shut, and thousands marched the streets waving white flags and chanting “restore peace now.” The public outcry focused on the increasing instances of abductions, extortion, targeted killings, and bomb blasts that have terrorized the region over the past year.

Leaders from major parties like JUI-F, PTI, PPP, JI, ANP, PML-N, PMAP, PTM, and NDM joined the protest. Prominent figures such as Taj Wazir, Maulana Rafiuddin, and MNA Zubair Wazir condemned the state’s failure to curb militant activity and called for immediate government action.

A 13-point charter of demands was presented at the protest’s conclusion, including:

  • Reinstating police control in the region
  • Reopening schools in Birmal tehsil
  • Resuming cross-border trade at Angoor Adda
  • Banning tinted vehicles and public display of arms
  • Relocating courts from Tank to Wana
  • Addressing the rampant kidnappings and land grabs
  • Releasing political prisoners including Ali Wazir

This unified show of public dissent marks a critical turning point in the socio-political landscape of South Waziristan, emphasizing citizens’ urgent call for peace, justice, and accountable governance.

Pakistan continues to grapple with worsening security, amid a resurgence of militant groups, political unrest, and socio-economic instability, making regional peace increasingly fragile.
