Matthew Hayden Praises Ravichandran Ashwin’s “Smart Cricketing Mind” After Retirement

Tributes pour in for the legendary off-spinner as he bids farewell to international cricket, leaving behind an illustrious legacy.

Brisbane [Australia], December 19: Former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden hailed Ravichandran Ashwin as a “smart cricketer” following the Indian off-spinner’s surprising retirement announcement. The 38-year-old cricketer declared his retirement from international cricket after the conclusion of India’s match against Australia, leaving fans and teammates emotional.

Ashwin’s departure from the game was hinted at during a heartfelt on-field moment between him and Virat Kohli, sparking speculation that was later confirmed when Ashwin joined captain Rohit Sharma to make the official announcement.

Hayden’s Tribute

Speaking exclusively to Star Sports, Matthew Hayden praised Ashwin’s tactical brilliance and unwavering focus on the game.

“Yeah, I think Sunny [Sunil Gavaskar] described him really well—a very smart cricketer. He’s always working out a cunning plan, staying on task, and believing in his abilities,” Hayden remarked. He acknowledged Ashwin’s polarizing persona but emphasized his immense contribution to the sport. “He’s a very strong-minded person. I personally want to wish Ashwin a wonderful retirement.”

Ashwin’s Remarkable Career

Ashwin, who debuted in 2011 against the West Indies, retires as one of the greatest spinners in cricket history. His career in numbers speaks volumes:

  • Tests Played: 106
  • Wickets: 537, including 37 five-wicket hauls
  • Runs Scored: 3,503

Ashwin dominated against Australia, claiming 115 wickets in 23 matches at an economy rate of 2.71. Notably, he holds the record for the most wickets in a single Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, with 29 dismissals in the 2020-21 contest.

Ashwin also became the fastest Indian to reach 350 Test wickets and ranks as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests, with an economy rate of 2.83.

Emotional Farewell

Fans and cricketing legends have been flooding social media with tributes, celebrating Ashwin’s legacy. His ability to adapt, strategize, and outfox opponents has left an indelible mark on the sport.

As cricket bids farewell to one of its brightest minds, Ashwin’s name will remain etched in the record books as a player who brought both intellect and passion to the game.
