January 1, 2025: Former Australia cricketer Glenn McGrath has lauded Jasprit Bumrah for his remarkable performance during the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, highlighting that his presence has been pivotal for India, especially in the recent Melbourne Test where Australia secured an 184-run victory to take a 2-1 series lead. McGrath emphasized that without Bumrah, the series could have been “more one-sided” in Australia’s favour, underscoring the pacer’s immense value to the Indian team.
Despite India’s loss in the Melbourne Test, Bumrah’s efforts with the ball stood out. In the first innings, when Australia was in control, Bumrah took three quick wickets, bringing India back into the contest. His performance in the second innings was equally commendable, as he finished with figures of 9/156, solidifying his status as one of the most crucial bowlers for India in this series. His remarkable consistency throughout the tournament has earned him the title of the highest wicket-taker in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, with 30 wickets at an impressive average of 12.83.
Reflecting on Bumrah’s exceptional skills, McGrath described him as a “class” and “unique” player, commending his unconventional bowling action. McGrath noted, “Bumrah to me is class, there’s no doubt about it. He’s unique. He has an action you wouldn’t teach a young guy, but he’s found a way to adapt it, and he’s just absolutely incredible.” McGrath, who himself had a distinctive bowling action, also pointed out Bumrah’s ability to generate pace and control the ball in both directions, which makes him such a dangerous threat. “The way he powers in those last few steps, powers through the crease… he’s got incredible control both ways,” McGrath added.
McGrath, who is clearly a big admirer of Bumrah’s skills, also spoke highly of the seamer’s remarkable statistics. “His stats are unbelievable. So, yeah, I’m a massive fan of Jasprit. I met him when he was younger, and what he’s grown into is unbelievable.” McGrath acknowledged that Bumrah has become an essential part of the Indian team, and his contributions are a key reason why the series has remained competitive. He remarked, “Without him, this series might be a little bit more one-sided.”
Bumrah’s ability to shine in crucial moments, even during tough losses, has earned him the respect of many cricketing greats like McGrath. As India gears up for the final match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Sydney Cricket Ground from January 3, 2025, Bumrah’s performance will undoubtedly remain a focal point, as India looks to bounce back and level the series.
In the Melbourne Test, Pat Cummins was named Player of the Match for his outstanding contributions with both bat and ball, helping Australia secure a commanding win and pushing India out of contention for the World Test Championship final at Lord’s next year.
