Villagers in Amritsar report loud blasts and flashes in the sky; missile remains recovered from fields hours after Operation Sindoor strikes.
May 8, 2025: Amritsar, Punjab — Panic swept through villages in Punjab’s Amritsar district early Thursday morning after multiple explosions were heard and bright flashes were seen in the sky, just hours after India conducted precision strikes under Operation Sindoor.
At least three villages — Jethuwal, Makhan Windi, and Pandher — reported missile debris scattered across fields and rooftops. Eyewitnesses said the blasts occurred between 1 am and 2 am, followed by a power outage in the area.
“There was panic all around. A part of the missile fell in a field at Jethuwal, and debris was found on rooftops,” said local resident Parkash Singh.
Police and Army personnel arrived promptly and cordoned off the affected sites. In Makhan Windi village, the shell of what appeared to be a missile was recovered from a field close to residential areas. In Pandher, which falls under the Majitha police station, additional metallic fragments were found.
Amritsar, just 30 km from the India-Pakistan border, has been on high alert following India’s retaliatory missile strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. These strikes came in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 civilians were killed.

“I woke up with a start when I heard the explosion. Family members across the city were calling to confirm what had happened,” said Jaswinder Singh, a local advocate.
Though no official statement has confirmed the origin or purpose of the debris, police have refused to comment, citing updated security protocols. Amritsar airport operations have also been suspended until further notice.
Local residents are urging authorities to issue clear updates to prevent misinformation and ensure community safety. “Citizens need to be informed so we can stay alert and safe,” Jaswinder added.
