Mitchell Marsh Excluded, Beau Webster To Debut As Australia Announces Playing XI For Sydney Test Against India

January 2, 2025: Ahead of the Sydney Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), Australia has made a surprising change to their playing XI for the final match of the series, with 31-year-old Beau Webster set to make his Test debut. This marks the second debutant for Australia in the ongoing series, after Sam Konstas impressed with a fiery performance in the Melbourne Test.

Australia has dropped Mitchell Marsh, who has been struggling for form in the series, averaging just 10.42 with the bat and not being particularly impactful with the ball. Despite earlier concerns about back issues, Marsh was fully fit but has been replaced by Webster, who has been in solid form in first-class cricket.

Webster will be the 469th Test player for Australia, and his selection comes after strong performances in recent domestic matches. Notably, he claimed 12 wickets across his last three first-class outings, including a significant performance against India A in Melbourne, where he took six wickets and scored an unbeaten 46. His recent all-round form, along with the quick turnaround from the Melbourne Test, made him the preferred choice for the sixth batter role.

In contrast, Mitchell Starc, who had been struggling with rib soreness after the Melbourne Test, retains his place in the playing XI after being cleared fit for the match. His inclusion ensures Australia’s pace attack remains strong for the decisive final Test.

The Australia XI for the Sydney Test is:

  • Sam Konstas
  • Usman Khawaja
  • Marnus Labuschagne
  • Steve Smith
  • Travis Head
  • Beau Webster (debut)
  • Alex Carey (WK)
  • Pat Cummins (C)
  • Mitchell Starc
  • Nathan Lyon
  • Scott Boland

With Australia leading the series 2-1 and India needing a victory in Sydney to draw level, the final Test promises to be a gripping encounter. The inclusion of Webster adds intrigue to Australia’s strategy, especially given the nature of the pitch in Sydney, which could assist spinners and all-rounders alike.
