Mithali Raj Hails Amelia Kerr’s Tactical Brilliance In WPL Victory

March 7, 2025: Amelia Kerr produced a stellar all-round performance to lead Mumbai Indians (MI) to a commanding six-wicket victory over UP Warriorz in their Women’s Premier League (WPL) clash in Lucknow. While Hayley Matthews set the tone with a crucial half-century, it was Kerr’s exceptional bowling that stole the spotlight as she dismantled the opposition with figures of 5/38.

The match started with UP Warriorz setting a strong foundation, and for a moment, it seemed like they might take control. However, Kerr’s brilliance with the ball turned the tide in Mumbai’s favor. Her spell was particularly impressive against the likes of Kiran Navgire and Chinelle Henry, who were forced into uncomfortable positions due to her smart tactics. Speaking on JioHotstar, former India captain Mithali Raj praised Kerr’s approach, focusing on how she outsmarted her opponents.

“At one point, when the UP Warriorz had a strong opening partnership, it seemed like Mumbai Indians were searching for a breakthrough. But once they got that wicket, Amelia Kerr was brave enough to toss the ball up even to Kiran Navgire and Chinelle Henry. She adjusted her line to be a little wider, ensuring they couldn’t play within their preferred arc,” said Mithali.

Kerr’s ability to read the conditions and execute her variations effectively made a significant difference. “She bowled with a clear plan, adapting well to the surface and using her variations effectively. The best part was how she dismissed Deepti Sharma and Chinelle Henry—bowling with a wider line and tossing it up,” Mithali continued.

Even though Kerr’s contributions with the bat have been limited this season, her all-round skills with the ball have been undeniable. As a world-class all-rounder, she has proven her worth as a match-winner for Mumbai Indians, even when she isn’t delivering with the bat.

Mumbai’s chase was made smoother by Hayley Matthews, who laid a solid foundation for the team with her half-century. This victory saw Mumbai Indians climb to the second spot in the WPL standings, with four wins and two losses, putting them in a strong position for playoff qualification.
