Mohammad Nabi Hints at Continued ODI Career, Focuses on Grooming Young Afghan Talent
New Delhi, February 17: Veteran Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi has indicated that he is not retiring from ODI cricket after the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Instead, the 40-year-old plans to reduce his appearances in the format to give younger players more opportunities while continuing based on his fitness levels.
Nabi, who was part of Afghanistan’s first-ever ODI squad in 2009, is now gearing up to play in the team’s maiden Champions Trophy campaign. Despite his age, he remains eager to contribute to Afghan cricket.
“I am still thinking (about the future). These might not be my last ODIs. I will probably play fewer matches and give youngsters the chance to build experience,” Nabi told the ICC. “I have discussed it with senior players. Whether I play high-level games or not will depend on my fitness.”
Fresh from winning the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) with Fortune Barishal, Nabi believes his recent success has strengthened his confidence ahead of the Champions Trophy.
“The preparations for the Champions Trophy have been good. I did three sessions with the national team in Abu Dhabi, so I am in good shape,” said Nabi.
“Winning the BPL gave me more confidence, especially winning from a tough position in the final. Throughout the tournament, we performed well, and I contributed with both bat and ball, finishing matches for my team in four or five games.”
Afghanistan’s squad for the Champions Trophy features a mix of experienced players and fresh faces, including 20-year-old spinner Nangialai Kharoti, whom Nabi believes can make an impact.
“He is a talented youngster who has been performing well over the last two years. He is not only a good spinner but also a strong fielder,” said Nabi.
“He bowled really well against South Africa and Ireland in Sharjah. Hopefully, he gets some wickets in the Champions Trophy—it would be great for the team.”
Kharoti joins a formidable Afghan spin attack, led by Rashid Khan, who recently surpassed Dwayne Bravo to become the leading wicket-taker in T20 cricket.
Nabi heaped praise on Rashid Khan, calling him a game-changer and a relentless competitor.
“He is the greatest T20 bowler in the world. Inshallah, he will soon reach 1000 wickets! He is still young, energetic, and has an endless hunger for more wickets,” said Nabi.
“On the field, he is aggressive and fights for every ball, bringing extra energy. Off the field, he is a very humble person who enjoys every moment away from cricket.”
Afghanistan is placed in Group B, alongside South Africa, England, and Australia. They will begin their Champions Trophy campaign against South Africa on February 21 in Karachi.
