Mohammed Shami Receives Death Threat Amid IPL, ₹1 Crore Ransom Demanded

FIR registered in Amroha; cyber threat comes weeks after a similar email was sent to India head coach Gautam Gambhir.

May 5, 2025 | India pacer Mohammed Shami has reportedly received a death threat via email, with the sender demanding a ransom of ₹1 crore, according to a complaint filed by his family. The incident occurred on Sunday, prompting the Cyber Crime Police Station in Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha district to register an FIR on Monday.

The complaint, filed by Shami’s brother, Haseeb, has identified the sender as Rajput Sindar. It has been filed under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act, including:

  • IPC (BNS) 2023 Section 308(4)
  • IT Act Section 66D and 66E

Shami, currently representing Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in IPL 2025, has played nine matches so far, taking six wickets at an average of 56.17. While his IPL performance has been modest, he played a key role in India’s victorious Champions Trophy campaign, grabbing nine wickets in five matches — including a five-wicket haul against Bangladesh.

🧾 Previous Threats to Indian Cricketers

The incident comes just weeks after India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir also received a threatening email. The Delhi Police confirmed the complaint and assured security for the former MP, who is under police protection.

“We have been informed about an alleged threat mail received on an email ID associated with Gautam Gambhir. The matter is being investigated,” said DCP (Central) V. Harsha Vardhan.

Following the Pahalgam terror attack in April that killed 26 civilians, a heightened security alert has been in place for public figures, especially those associated with national institutions.


🚨 Investigation Underway

Authorities have launched an investigation into the email received by Shami, and his security is being reviewed in coordination with relevant agencies.

Further details about the sender’s identity and the motive are awaited. The cricketing fraternity has expressed concern over the growing frequency of such threats against national sports figures.
