MoS Sanjay Seth Meets President Putin, Strengthens Indo-Russian Defence Ties and Anti-Terror Cooperation

May 9, 2025: Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Friday during his visit to attend the 80th Victory Day Parade. Representing India at the commemorative banquet, Seth conveyed the Indian government’s gratitude for Russia’s continued support in combating terrorism, particularly cross-border threats.

Taking to social media, Seth wrote, “Honoured to meet President Vladimir Putin during my Russia visit. Represented India at the banquet marking the 80th Victory Day anniversary. Expressed gratitude for Russia’s support in India’s fight against terrorism under the leadership of Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi Jee.”

During his visit, Seth also laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, paying homage to those who perished in World War II. He held key bilateral talks with Colonel General Alexander Fomin, Russian Deputy Defence Minister, focusing on enhancing military and technical cooperation.

In a post reflecting on the meeting, Seth stated, “I thanked the Government and people of Russia for their support in India’s fight against cross-border terrorism. We had a positive discussion on multifaceted military and military-technical cooperation.”

Both sides agreed to strengthen defence collaboration through existing institutional frameworks and maintain regular high-level consultations to adapt to evolving global security challenges.

Seth was received in Moscow on Thursday by Indian Ambassador Vinay Kumar and Major General Oleg Molessev of the Russian Defence Ministry. His visit underlines India’s commitment to deepening strategic ties with Russia amid a shifting global geopolitical landscape.

Victory Day, celebrated annually on May 9, marks the Soviet Union’s historic triumph over Nazi Germany in World War II and features a large military parade in Moscow, symbolising national pride and global solidarity against fascism.
