Mumbai Indians Storm into IPL 2025 Playoffs with Commanding Win Over Delhi Capitals
Mumbai, May 22:
Mumbai Indians (MI) punched their ticket to the IPL 2025 playoffs with a resounding 59-run victory over Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday night. Star pacer Jasprit Bumrah and spinner Mitchell Santner dismantled DC’s batting line-up, combining for six wickets as the hosts successfully defended a total of 180.
With this win, MI became the fourth and final team to qualify for the playoffs, joining Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Punjab Kings.
Chasing 181, Delhi Capitals crumbled under pressure and were bundled out for just 121 in 18.2 overs. Bumrah led the charge with figures of 3/12 in just 3.2 overs, while Santner was equally lethal with 3/11 from his full quota of 4 overs.
Delhi got off to a disastrous start, losing Faf du Plessis (6), KL Rahul (11), and Abhishek Porel (6) for just 27 runs. Vipraj Nigam (20) and Sameer Rizvi (39) tried to build resistance but were dismissed as the middle order collapsed under relentless MI pressure.
DC briefly crossed the 100-run mark in the 14th over but lost three quick wickets soon after, including Rizvi, Ashutosh Sharma (18), and Madhav Tiwari (3). The innings wrapped up at 121, with Bumrah cleaning up Mustafizur Rehman in the 19th over.
Earlier, DC stand-in captain Faf du Plessis won the toss and opted to bowl. MI posted a competitive total of 180/5 in 20 overs, thanks largely to a brilliant 73 off 43 balls* from Suryakumar Yadav.
MI lost Rohit Sharma early for just 5 runs. Partnerships from Will Jacks (21) and Tilak Varma (27) kept the scoreboard ticking, while Naman Dhir’s unbeaten 24 off just 8 balls helped MI finish strong. The team crossed the 150-mark in the penultimate over with Dhir smashing a six off Mukesh Kumar.
