The powerful 7.7-magnitude quake wreaked havoc across central Myanmar and parts of Southeast Asia, leaving hospitals overwhelmed, buildings flattened, and over 20 confirmed dead.

A massive 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck central Myanmar on Friday has transformed a major 1000-bed hospital in Naypyidaw into a “mass casualty area,” according to AFP reports. The hospital, one of the largest in the Myanmar capital, has been inundated with injured people being treated on the streets, as emergency staff struggle to manage the unfolding crisis.
“I haven’t seen anything like this before. We’re trying to handle it, but I’m exhausted,” a doctor on site told AFP.

So far, at least 20 deaths have been confirmed, including 10 individuals at a mosque in Mandalay that collapsed during Friday prayers. A further 43 construction workers remain trapped under the rubble of a collapsed 30-storey government building in Bangkok’s Chatuchak area following severe tremors that extended across northern Thailand.

Videos from Myanmar and Bangkok posted on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) show chaotic scenes—buildings shaking violently, metro services halting mid-route, and terrified residents fleeing into the streets. One particularly grim video captured the moment an under-construction skyscraper crumbled in seconds into dust and debris.

Widespread Damage Reported:
- In Myanmar’s Sagaing region, near the epicenter, an old Irrawaddy River bridge collapsed, while damage was also reported on the Mandalay-Yangon highway.
- Religious shrines, homes, and airports in Mandalay and Taunggyi sustained major structural damage.
- A monastery near the Thai border was reduced to rubble.
- In Thailand, Bangkok’s metro services were temporarily suspended, and Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has declared a state of emergency.
Meanwhile, China’s Yunnan province recorded tremors measured at 7.9 magnitude, and mild shaking was felt as far as Kolkata, Imphal, Dhaka, and Chattogram.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concern and stated that India is ready to provide all possible assistance, directing the Ministry of External Affairs to stay in contact with both Myanmar and Thailand.
