Myanmar Earthquake Update: 7.7-Magnitude, Devastates Central Myanmar, 43 Missing Amid Widespread Destruction

Powerful tremors shake Bangkok and Yunnan; collapsed buildings, damaged infrastructure, and missing workers deepen concerns after twin quakes hit near Sagaing.

March 28, 2025: New Delhi:
A massive 7.7-magnitude earthquake rocked central Myanmar on Friday afternoon, followed shortly by a powerful aftershock measuring 6.8. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake struck at 12:50 PM local time with an epicentre just 16 kilometers northwest of Sagaing city, approximately 250 kilometers from the capital Naypyidaw. The quake originated at a shallow depth of 10 km, increasing the surface impact.

Though no tsunami alert has been issued, the tremors were felt far and wide—jolting cities in northern Thailand, including Bangkok, where metro and train services were halted, and in China’s Yunnan province, where authorities pegged the quake at a staggering magnitude of 7.9.

In Thailand, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra called for an urgent meeting to assess the crisis. Panic gripped Bangkok, as videos flooded social media showing high-rise buildings swaying and residents rushing out into the streets. In one widely circulated clip, water spilled over the edge of a rooftop infinity pool, cascading down the side of a building. Another terrifying video showed a skyscraper under construction collapsing entirely, with 43 workers now reported missing, as per the Open Source Intelligence Monitor.

Damage in Myanmar and Beyond

Inside Myanmar, structural damage was widespread. An old bridge over the Irrawaddy River collapsed, and several residential buildings crumbled. In Mandalay, just 24 km from the epicenter, images indicated that more people might be trapped under the debris. The airport in Mandalay reportedly sustained severe damage, and a monastery near Taunggyi, in Shan State bordering Thailand, also collapsed.

Myanmar’s historical vulnerability to seismic events stems from the Sagaing Fault Line, which runs north to south through the country. Between 1930 and 1956, at least six earthquakes of 7.0 magnitude or more struck along this fault. The 2016 Bagan quake, measuring 6.8, had claimed three lives and destroyed centuries-old temples.

The country’s fragile healthcare infrastructure, particularly in rural regions, now faces a daunting challenge in responding to the aftermath.
