NASA Warns of Asteroid Colliding With Earth in 2032 with 1-in-83 Chance

The asteroid, measuring up to 300 feet, could release energy equivalent to 8 megatons of TNT if it hits Earth, threatening massive destruction.

February 1, 2025: NASA scientists have identified an asteroid, 2024 YR4, which could potentially collide with Earth on December 22, 2032, with a 1-in-83 chance of impact.

Measuring between 130 to 300 feet in diameter, the asteroid poses no risk of global extinction but could unleash catastrophic destruction if it strikes a densely populated area. According to estimates, the collision would release energy equivalent to 8 megatons of TNT—over 500 times the power of the Hiroshima atomic bomb.

Initial Observations and Risk Analysis

The asteroid was first detected on December 27, 2024, by NASA’s Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) in Chile and later added to NASA’s automated Sentry risk list. This list monitors near-Earth asteroids with a non-zero probability of impacting the planet.

While the asteroid currently has a calculated 1% chance of hitting Earth, scientists emphasize that further observations will likely refine its trajectory. Historically, asteroids flagged on the Sentry list have often been downgraded to zero risk as more data becomes available.

Energy and Potential Impact

Should 2024 YR4 strike Earth, its impact would rival the energy of 8 megatons of TNT, capable of obliterating an urban center and causing widespread devastation. However, with over 99% probability of the asteroid missing Earth, experts urge caution rather than alarm.

Past and Ongoing Monitoring Efforts

NASA and international organizations continuously monitor near-Earth objects (NEOs) to assess potential threats. The Minor Planet Center acts as the global hub for cataloging and updating asteroid positional measurements.

Asteroids have frequently been downgraded from risk levels as tracking data improves. Experts remain optimistic that more precise observations will provide clarity on 2024 YR4’s trajectory in the coming months.

As NASA’s observations progress, the world will await updates to determine whether the asteroid will remain a theoretical threat or be downgraded to harmless space debris.
